How I Work: W-L Alfalfas

Ben H. Fizette Published on 01 May 2014
The fundamental key to any successful dairy or beef operation is a good supply of high-yielding and high-quality forage. As an account manager for W-L Alfalfas, I get to be involved in that role on a daily basis.

My territory extends from the hills of southern Missouri north to the Canadian border, then east from the Kansas-Nebraska line through the Midwest to the Ohio state line.

My primary role is to provide agronomic and marketing support for seed distributors and dealers throughout the Midwest. I typically spend 150 days a year on the road accumulating 40,000 miles behind the wheel of a truck.

Much of my travel is geared toward producer and dealer meetings, farm calls, field days and trade shows.

On a typical day, I may be giving an alfalfa production presentation in conjunction with university extension to a group of farmers. On another day, I may be in the field with a farmer and a local agronomist looking for an answer to a specific production issue.

On any given day, I may be giving a marketing presentation to a group of seed dealers. I also spend time at each of our research stations with our research staff staying abreast of new genetics and traits being evaluated.

The customer base that I work with is extremely diverse. From the part-time beef producer with 30 cows to the commercial hay producer with 800 acres of alfalfa to the dairy farmer with 3,000 dairy cows, they all have the same goal: produce as much high-quality and high-tonnage alfalfa for their particular operation.

There is nothing more gratifying than working with a producer who has this need and helping them to not only meet that need but exceed it.

As a part of today’s workforce, I am fortunate to be one of the few who love what I do. My passion is fueled by a degree in agronomy, over a decade of retail agronomy experience and working as a part-time hay and grain producer.

The best part of what I do is getting to work alongside a great customer network helping to improve the success of today’s and tomorrow’s alfalfa growers.  FG
